Abstract

Patient satisfaction is a central nursing-sensitive quality indicator closely linked to perceptions of communication, responsiveness, and relational engagement. Individualized Nursing Care Plans operationalize patient-centred nursing by structuring care around patients' unique needs, values, and contexts. This study aimed to synthesize existing evidence and develop a coherent conceptual explanation of how individualized nursing care planning influences patient satisfaction. A narrative synthesis and conceptual framework reconstruction approach was employed, drawing on systematic reviews, cross-sectional surveys, observational studies, mediation analyses, qualitative research, and implementation studies addressing individualized care, care planning, patient experience, and satisfaction, with findings integrated to identify patterns, mechanisms, and gaps. Across settings, satisfaction was consistently associated with patient-centred processes—particularly communication quality, educational guidance, responsiveness, and caring presence—though informational domains underperformed relative to technical competence and interpersonal courtesy, revealing gaps in discharge preparation. Patient experience explained substantial variance in satisfaction, supporting its interpretation as a process-driven outcome. Missed nursing care, especially communication omissions, was negatively associated with satisfaction and trust, positioning care-process reliability as a key mechanism. Individualized care plans enhance satisfaction when enacted as relational, communicative processes rather than mere documentation, highlighting the need for investment in nursing work environments and future longitudinal, interventional research.
